GRS (Global recycled standard in English and "global recycled standard" in Chinese)

The Chinese translation of GRS is "global recycled standard" (GRS for short). It was originally drafted by control Union (certification body of international environmental protection management union), and later the ownership of this standard was handed over to textile exchange. GRS certification is an international, spontaneous and complete standard. Through the third-party certification, we can examine the product recovery rate, product status, social responsibility, environmental protection and chemical restriction of enterprises. It is an industrial tool with practical effects. By obtaining this international certification, manufacturers can enhance the green and environmental competitiveness of their products.

The objectives of the global recycling standard GRS are:

1. Unify the definition of multiple applications.

2. Traceability of recyclable input materials.

3. Provide customers (brands and consumers) with a tool to make informed decisions.

4. Reduce the harmful impact of production on people and the environment.

5. Ensure more sustainable recycling and disposal of materials in the final products.

6. Promote the innovation of quality problem solving methods in the use of recycled materials.

What are the main contents of GRS standard?

GRS certification mainly involves GRS production management system, social responsibility, environment, chemical use management, GRS label use, etc.

1. GRS production management system (traceability criteria, criteria related to product transportation and certificate use, criteria related to purchased product control, criteria related to quality control, criteria related to the calculation of the quantity ratio between GRS materials and non GRS materials using the total balance calculation method, etc.).

2. Environmental compliance (standards related to environmental management, including complete environmental assessment related documents, environmental policies, environmental applicable laws and regulations, energy use, waste water, waste gas, waste management, environmental objectives, energy conservation management, etc.).

3. Social responsibility (the standards related to workers' health and safety, workers' rights, training, health, danger and first aid, etc. if the enterprise has done SA8000 / BSCI / SEDEX or similar social responsibility certification or factory inspection before, it can refer to the audit contents of these standards).

4. Chemical management (chemical management policy, chemical list, chemical procurement, control, risk assessment, chemical use training, etc.).

5. GRS label level and mark application, and the criteria related to label level and mark application.

Special reminder: many enterprises have weak foundation in environment, social responsibility and chemical management, which makes GRS certification difficult.

RCS (full name in English is recycled claim standard, and Chinese name is "recycling declaration standard").

The purpose of RCS certification is to ensure that the product contains recycled materials. Make consumers believe that the products they buy contain recycled materials because they choose products made of recycled materials. Passing this certification will help to increase the use of recycled materials and reduce the amount of waste.

RWS (full English Name: responsible wool standard, Chinese Name: responsible wool standard)

Agriculture is one of the oldest occupations. Farmers' careful care for their animals and land has brought long-term success to agriculture. Responsible wool standards (RWS) provide farmers with the opportunity to demonstrate best practices to the public, and also allow brands and consumers to determine that the wool products they buy and sell conform to their values.

RWS is a tool to ensure that the wool comes from sheep raised according to five free standards, ensure that the land is managed responsibly, and provide a reliable chain of custody system so that the material source of all products can be verified.

The standard was developed by an international working group (IWG) through an open and transparent process. The first thing we need to do is to include representatives of all potential stakeholders and create a tool that balances effective needs and reality using realistic and auditable standards. Brands also said they needed to ensure animal welfare and land management. Animal welfare experts and industry insiders put forward suggestions on the best practices of animal welfare and sheep husbandry. Land management experts, professionals and farmers in high-risk ecological areas shared their practical experience in protecting land degradation. This standard combines the expertise and perspectives of all major wool producing regions in the world.

This is a voluntary standard and is not intended to replace the legal or regulatory requirements of any country. It is the responsibility of each operator to demonstrate compliance with all applicable laws and regulations relating to marketing, labor and business practices.

The objective of the responsible wool standard is to provide the industry with the best tools possible:

• recognize farmers' best practices

• ensure that the wool comes from farms that manage the land in an advanced way and from sheep that are treated responsibly

• establish an industry benchmark that can promote the improvement of animal management and land management in a timely manner

• provide a reliable chain of custody system from the farm to the final product, and let consumers believe that the wool in their selected products meets the real RWS.

The target audience of RWS includes farmers engaged in wool production, certification bodies that provide certification services according to standards, and companies that purchase and sell products containing RWS certified wool.

These standards belong to the textile exchange. In addition to the three standards of GRS / RCS / RWS, there are also OCS (organic content standard), CCS (content declaration standard), RDS (responsible down standard), RMS (responsible Mohair standard) and RAS (responsible alpaca hair standard). As more and more well-known brands participate in and promote the use of environmentally friendly materials, te series standards have developed rapidly. By 2021, nearly 49000 sites have been certified by all te certification projects, of which about 50% are GRS certification sites. The following data shows the changes in the number of certification enterprises of te series standards in the world and China in recent years. It can be seen that the growth rate of the number of certification sites is very amazing.
